Please join us on our adventure as we discovered parts of the lake district we hadnt stumbled upon yet. We visited Glasson Docks, Ennerdale, Buttermere, Crummock Waters, Whitehaven and St. Bees.
Whitehaven
I am not so convinced we liked whitehaven. Feeling fortunate to be in a place, where you can be within the mountains and country side by day, yet only 15 minutes away from Ennerdale, where we were staying, was the sea side town of Whitehaven. Apart from the marina filled with boats and fishing vessels, along with the wide opening towards the Irish sea, I wouldn’t say I enjoyed being here. The restaurants and shops nearby seemed antiquated and dated. We arrived on a sunday to find every eatery was shut. It was equalised to a ghost town. We managed to find the one open place which was nearby to the port. Whitehaven comes with its historical background of miners, coalpits and how the fortress was once bombarded during the war. Interesting facts and statues of the place gave the town character and interest, but it wouldnt be a place I would care to re visit.

Buttermere & Crummock Waters
We had visited the lakes numerous times in the past. However, like the crowds of tourists, we followed to the usual areas we all know and love. Windamere & Kendal were always where we headed to. Yet I couldn’t help be disappointed at the one hour or day trip cruisers, souvenir shops and multi ice cream & fish and chip shops that came with it. Surely somewhere in this area, the lakes wernt as touristy or commercialised. At long last, we found the very place. It was only through speaking to another hotel guest the previous evening, we discovered the name Crummock Waters. Not having heard of it before, I researched it and found there were three lakes near each other. Loweswater, Crummock Waters & Buttermere. We headed there the following day with swim stuff in hand, as we were determined to go wild swimming. The adventure of that day was more than we could have imagined. An area of outstanding beauty, no tourist commercial buildings or ferry rides, this was how we had imagined the lakes to be. We found our heaven on earth. The only people there were walkers, some having picnics and the resident lambs of the area, that quietly walked by you looking for their next meal of fresh grass. Later that night, I thanked that man who had informed of this secret jewel in the crown area. We have booked to go back in the Autumn.

On the way here, we noticed the beauty and rugged mountains. Lambs were grazing along the side of the road. We lost our wifi ! This was telling me, we had hit some real natural organic countryside. With only the lambs and the odd passing car as company , we stopped to take in the views surrounding us.

Sunset at Glasson Marina

Kobi loved feeding the swans & ducks from Trace & Keith’s boat.
Loving the sunset from Estuary view
Is this the Med ? No, it is the Irish Sea !

On our way to the lakes, we broke up our journey with a visit to a friend’s boat, which was moored up at Glasson Docks, not too far from Lancaster. Considering it is quite close to home, we hadnt heard of the area before. To our surprise, we stumbled across beautiful sea views, sunsets, beach and countryside. Driving through the green british scenery, winding country B roads meandering through quaint villages, was a delight after being in lock down in suburbia. When we arrived in Glasson, the nautical atmosphere, hearing the sea gulls and enjoying the days hot weather, we could almost pretend we were in a Mediterranean fishing village somewhere. The sunset was a pleasure to view from a nearby view point over looking the entrance way towards the Irish Sea. We will return to Glasson. Our new “go to” for a days out adventure.
The Beauty of The Northern Lakes

We have just returned from our 2020 Staycation. We decided to go to the beautiful area of Cumbria for a get away for days. Not wanting the hoards of tourists and large crowds, we decided on Ennerdale, in the northern lakes. We found a quaint beautiful hotel which had charm and dated splendour. A wanted atmosphere to relax on return from a busy sightseeing and walking day.
